Church History

"Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations."  Psalm 90:1

On October 2, 1939 the Presbytery of Detroit officially commissioned the Grosse Pointe Woods Presbyterian Church with 123 charter members. Prior to that time, interested families had been meeting in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Bockstanz and then in the gymnasium of Mason School. We began as a satellite of Grosse Pointe Memorial Church, which helped with organization and a financial gift of $25,000. Two of its fine members, Dr. and Mrs. Harry N. Torrey donated the land for the new church's building and grounds.

The construction of the building, as it now stands, took place in several stages, with members donating so generously that it is said that one woman gave up the remodeling of her kitchen in order to contribute to the new church. During the 1950s, the church grew to a membership of 2000 with over 1000 children enrolled in the church school. As many new churches sprang up during the 1960s, numerical membership declined, but programs, stewardship, and outreach continued to grow.

Today, God is doing great things in this congregation. We believe that God is our help, our hope, our health, and our home. As a part of the Presbyterian Church USA, everyone is invited and welcome to worship, to learn and to grow in his/her relationship with God and each other on the journey to mature faith.
